The 2014 CrossFit Games

L.A. TRAFFIC IS REAL! I’ve only heard rumors of how bad the 405 Freeway can be, but now I know why it gets that reputation.

We arrived at the StubHub center on Friday just in time to see the Team Frantasy Land/Big Bob 100. If you thought Fran was brutal, this was like triple Fran….on steroids….ended with a massive sled push.

In addition to watching live events each day, spectators also had access to Vendor Village, every CrossFit enthusiasts dream. Rogue, Reebok, Progenex, NorCal CrossFit (Jason Khalipa), CrossFit Mayhem (Rich Froning), Caffein & Kilos, Wodify……you name it. They all had tents set up with gear to purchase, athlete meet-n-greets, free samples, etc. We had the chance to chat it up with Christmas Abbott, Garrett Fisher, Kendrick Farris, & Dmitri Klokov, just to name a few.

You finally get to meet these people that you’ve been stalking on Instagram for months, and come to realize they are normal guys and gals, just like you and me.

Another great part of vendor Village was the food. Lots of options, some healthy and some not so healthy. From the Paleo Asian Turkey stir fry, to the bison burger, everything was delicious. And you were able to top it off with this.

Want to burn off some of those calories? Stop by the Reebok tent and attend a seminar on mobility with Kelly Starett, or test your skills at mini Fran (9-6-3) or the double under challenge (max DU’s in 1min).

Evening events were held in the tennis stadium, as opposed to the soccer stadium, so you had to get there early as seats were limited. If you didn’t make it in to see the Speed Clean Ladder or the Push Pull, you could head over to the enormous Beer Garden and watch the events on the massive movie screen.

Anticipation built all weekend for the final event. Could Froning win for a fourth consecutive year, sealing his fate as the greatest Games competitor ever? Or would the rookie Matt Fraser, who was currently a few points behind in second place, dethrone him? Would Camille finally stand atop the podium as the Fittest Woman in the world? As we gathered to watch these elite competitors throw down, I glanced at my program guide for the final workout:
Thick-N-Quick

For time:
4 rope climbs
3 overhead squats (245 / 165 lb.)

(Time Cap: 4 minutes)

3-2-1-GO! And in the blink of an eye, Mr. Rich Froning completed the workout first, with Fraser coming in right behind him. Camille on the other hand took 12th place in this event. At this point, she still remained in the first overall position due to her commanding point lead.

All done? No way this is CrossFit! Dave Castro took to the mic, athletes still catching their breath, and announced the final task – “Your final event will be Grace, 30 Clean and Jerks for time. But because this is the CrossFit Games, you will be doing double Grace….. Some athletes were shocked. Others took the news and immediately began mental preparation. From there the clock started to count down again, and the rest is history.

“Ladies and gentleman, I give to you, the 2011, 2012, 2013 and now 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games Champion……RICH FRONING!!”

Camille Leblanc-Bazinet stepped up next to Froning as the title of Fittest Woman Alive was announced. The 2014 CrossFit Games were an amazing experience.
