CrossFit Supercharged Philadelphia

Hometown: Parkesburg, PA

Age: 27

I started training at CrossFit Supercharged December 2013

My favorite workouts are the ones that involve sprints, lunges, or burpees. They are so mentally taxing you forget how much they are physically crushing you. I really like deadlifts too

Least favorite workouts are the ones that I struggle with the movements on. Double unders, handstand push-ups, and overhead squats.

I first got exposed to CrossFit while hanging out with a friend of mine who is now Green Beret. He just told me about a couple workouts he did with his SF team and I was blown away.

My first day of crossfit completely destroyed me. It was rowing, push-ups, pull-ups, and air squats. I had never even been into fitness at all before. I had to rest 4 days after that work out and was so sore I could barely work my day job. I can’t even compare it to workouts today. CrossFit has built my stamina and endurance up so much that recovery is almost instant after working out. I may get a little sore but nothing 5 minutes on a lacrosse ball can’t fix!

The changes in my fitness since starting CrossFit have been remarkable. I have lost a lot of weight and have ingrained much better movement patterns. My body awareness is a huge change also.

My favorite CrossFit moment was last summer when I was taking an endurance class at CrossFit Kop. We were running 1-mile time trials. I never looked at the WOD then and showed up with a 15 LB. weighted vest. I ran my fastest mile time that day with the vest. It was my first sub 6 minute mile, which I had been chasing for a couple months by then.

My six month goal is to sign up for some sort of race. Something totally insane. It forces me into a commitment to train harder than ever. I like putting myself into that situation.

The support that the coaches give to the athletes is outstanding. It’s all about testing and re-testing. Every time a coach calls out a fault in your form, they are honing your mind to focus on proper motor function so not only you operate optimally with 300 lbs on your back, but also perform optimally in any everyday life situation. It’s an incredible training methodology, but you need to have coaches of superb caliber. That is what CrossFit Supercharged has.

Do not let yourself become overwhelmed at all. Relax and always make sure you are having fun. Set small manageable goals that you can pick away at and remember its a lifestyle not just a commitment to work out.

My favorite hobby is music. I have been a musician all of my life. I have been playing the bass guitar for about 15 years.and drums for about 7. I have played almost every style on the bass. Blues, jazz, classic rock, heavy metal, and hard rock. I also have played in a couple original bands. Another hobby is hunting and fishing. I have a small property in Potter county PA that is in the middle of nowhere. I like going up there every year to hunt for some fresh meat. Venison is an excellent post-workout choice! I also work on restoring antique cars a little. I have a 1971 Chevelle that needs restored I’m just lacking the time commitment.

Thanks again everyone!

Throughout my years as a CrossFitt coach, I’ve seen some pretty dramatic changes in some people that I have had a hand in training. When Kyle got to Supercharged he was already in good shape physically having already had some CrossFit experience prior to walking in our gym. Even more important he was one of those athletes who always checked his ego at the door, always willing to learn more, adding to his already great understanding of proper movement.

You can count on Kyle Laying all on the line on a daily basis and no matter how hard he pushed himself he is right back on his feet cheering his teammates on down to the last rep. Having already been very mentally tough and looking for a new challenge he recently took on the spartan death race. This is no ordinary dance in the mud, it’s a knock down, drag out, are you physically and mentally ready endeavor. He was if I remember correctly close to 2 days into ( far beyond the point of quitting) the race before a minor mistake in one of the rules ended his adventure. At this time at least 70-80% had already quit. I respect his desire to not be to comfortable in our relativity safe and secure lifestyle.

He gave up control for those few days, not knowing when his next meal would come, how cold he would be, or how far he was gonna have to carry his 40 lb rock for. Your the man Kyle, I would share a foxhole with you any day brother. Congrats on AOTM

I just realized that two months in a row our athlete of the month has been a Tool fan, if you don’t know who that is, look up tool on the Google machine and your AOTM chances will dramatically increase followed by your new found hatred of 3 doors down

Peace out,
-Coach Jerry
